What do SpeakWrite typists do?
SpeakWrite typists schedule time to work in one-hour shifts, a week at a time. SpeakWrite is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and the schedule is made available two weeks in advance. At the time that they have selected on the schedule, typists sign on to our system, receive transcription work through our software, complete that work and submit it. This process is continued until the end of their scheduled shift, at which time they sign off until their next scheduled shift. [NOTE: WE DO NOT DO DATA ENTRY OF ANY TYPE. WE DO ONLY TRANSCRIPTION OF DOCUMENTS FROM AUDIO. WE HAVE NO DATA ENTRY POSITIONS.]

Do I have to work full time?
SpeakWrite allows you to decide the total hours you would like to work, as well as your schedule week to week. Once you are under contract, you will be given access to an on-line schedule to work from, specifying the hours you would like to work for a calendar month. We currently have sufficient work to keep you as busy as you want to be.

What is the compensation for a SpeakWrite typist and how is payment delivered?
SpeakWrite typists are paid at a rate of ½ cent per word transcribed. Good typists who meet our criteria can generally earn $10-$12 per hour after a short time of working within our system; some of our typists earn as much as $15 per hour or more. There are no caps on the amount you can earn, so the faster and more efficiently you can complete the work, the more you can make. Payment is made via check or direct deposit twice a month, shortly after the 1st and the 15th. [NOTE: We do not currently offer direct deposit for Canadian typists.]

How long does it take to apply to SpeakWrite?
Once you have submitted the necessary paperwork (which can be found under “Start Your Application”), we will review your information. Once approved, you will be notified by email, and you will be given access to web-based training which will introduce you to our software, and our Typist Manual, with guidelines for completing SpeakWrite work. Once these items have been reviewed, you will begin a series of testing jobs.

The testing jobs consist of a series of short jobs designed to demonstrate your typing skills, transcription knowledge, and understanding of SpeakWrite’s software and guidelines. They also verify that your computer is functioning properly with our software. These jobs can be completed at your own pace, but can generally be completed within a day or so. Once completed, the jobs will be reviewed to assure that your programs are properly in place, and that the quality of your work demonstrates an understanding of SpeakWrite guidelines and procedures. YOUR FINAL ACCEPTANCE AS A SPEAKWRITE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR WILL NOT BE DETERMINED UNTIL SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF THE TESTING JOBS.

All in all, the application process and testing can be completed in a couple of days or so if you actively work at completing the necessary material.

If the testing jobs are successfully completed, you will be accepted as a SpeakWrite independent contractor and will then be able to order a foot pedal (the foot pedal costs around $75 and is sold through a company independent of SpeakWrite). When you receive your pedal (which typically takes about a week to be delivered or can be 'rush' delivered if you wish), you will install and test your foot pedal and when your foot pedal is working properly you will be able to sign up for work. As long as your computer meets the requirements listed under "Equipment and Software Required" it is not necessary to purchase any other software or materials to work with us.
